The Jefferson Parish Council met on Wednesday to discuss plans for parades in the parish for Carnival 2021.
The council discussed possibly hosting the parades in May. However, the council did not think that it would be feasible to do, citing the rollout of vaccinations not being where they need to be and the rise in COVID-19 cases.
The council approved an amendment item to allow parades to possibly roll at a later date in the year if it is safe enough to do so.
The decision comes as the parish’s percent positivity rate is at 11.50%.
A total of 709 people have died in the parish since the pandemic began.
Surrounding parishes including Orleans, Lafourche, St. Tammany and St. Charles have announced that their parades are canceled.
