A man indicted last week in a wide-ranging federal investigation into alleged staged accidents in New Orleans, was killed Tuesday in a shooting, according to his attorney.
Cornelius Garrison is represented by federal public defender Claude Kelly who calls the situation “tragic.”
Kelly said Garrison was shot and killed Tuesday night on Foy Street near Gibson Street.
Garrison is part of a federal investigation into staged auto accidents in Gentilly and New Orleans East.
Nine people were named in the latest indictment, bringing the total number charged to 28 people.
They’re accused of working together to stage accidents along Interstate 10 in New Orleans East by slamming their cars or SUVs into commercial vehicles, then filing fraudulent insurance claims.
Garrison is alleged to have staged 50 accidents with more than $700,000 paid out in just two of those accidents
Each faces one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and six counts of mail fraud.
