‘Next level stupidity’: People react to cars doing donuts, speeding in the CBD

Multiple cars were caught on camera doing donuts and speeding on Howard Avenue in the CBD Sunday night.

People who work and live in the area told WDSU that this is not the first time a situation like this has happened.

“I’m sure it’s happened more than what I’ve seen,” said Nannette Babin, who works in the CBD. “It’s very dangerous. They can hit someone.”

Ricky Ricard, co-owner of G’s Pizza Group, watched as the cars sped by his business.

“A guy gets out with a megaphone, and there’s two other guys with walkie-talkies, and this was the most coordinated donut show I think I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Ricard. “It definitely spoiled the atmosphere for the people that were taking time out to enjoy a Sunday, what they thought was going to be a quiet dinner.”

WDSU reached out to Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s office and the New Orleans Police Department for comment. A spokesperson for the mayor referred us to NOPD, who said the agency is actively investigating the incident and that no arrests have been made at this time.

Rep. Royce Duplessis, whose congressional district covers the CBD, said more can be done. He told WDSU that he has talked to NOPD about monitoring social media to try to anticipate where the group will gather next.

He also suggested making certain intersections less attractive to reckless drivers.

“Something has to be put in the center of those streets that won’t impede traffic flow but will stop the spinning out from happening, and that’s something that needs to be implemented immediately,” Duplessis said. “It’s just next-level stupidity. Someone is going to get maimed or killed.”
