Voodoo Fest canceled for 2021, set to return in 2022

A popular New Orleans music festival will not return this year despite COVID-19 restrictions being relaxed for outdoor events.

Voodoo Festival posted an update on its website announcing it would not be taking place this year.

The festival will not return until 2022.

See the announcement below:

“Voodoo Music + Arts Experience will take a pause in 2021 and will return to City Park for an epic Halloween experience in 2022. As our city reopens with an abundance of events to reconnect with, we look forward to holding our reunion when we can fully embrace the Voodoo experience.

“Current ticketholders will receive an email from Front Gate Tickets within the next 24 hours including information about rollover and refund options.”

Park leaders say they were caught off guard by the announcement.

Voodoo Fest can bring in up to 75,000 people and millions of dollars to the city.

Robert DeViney, a City Park leader, said, “It’s always been reported in the millions hotel rooms, the dining. Anytime the city loses a major festival it’s an impact to everybody. We hate to lose any of the festivals. I don’t have any reason to speculate why the canceled it.”

Mayor Cantrell says there was no communication from the city to Voodoo Fest organizers that they could not proceed.

Thursday, her office confirmed permits have not yet been issued for French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest… Nor have those festivals submitted their applications yet.

“These organizers have to make decisions based on the conditions they are faced with whether its talent or the finances associated with it,” said Mayor Cantrell. “I respect the decision made as it relates to October. With one removing itself from the list, it allows us to breath a bit more, the public safety team that has to respond and make sure people are safe. We are going to continue looking forward to 2022.”
